Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The letter begins appropriately and covers the description of the rented lake house by mentioning features such as the large deck and the garden. The response also describes how time is being spent there, highlighting family activities and the upcoming barbecue and musical event. Finally, a clear invitation is extended to the friend, Gurdial, to join the gathering. The tone of the letter is consistently friendly and appropriate for the intended recipient. All parts of the prompt are fully covered and well-developed, resulting in a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization with a natural progression of ideas from describing the house to detailing current activities and finally issuing the invitation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the initial description, the planned events, and the personal invitation. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition words like 'Moreover' used to add information smoothly. However, referencing and linking could be slightly more refined in places, such as in the sentence starting with 'and place is exactly'. Overall, the arrangement of information is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general social letter, including phrases like 'exceptionaly beautiful', 'relaxing to live in', and 'wonderful memories'. However, there are a few lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'exceptionaly' (spelled with a single 'l'), 'Air Bnb' (should be Airbnb), and 'place have' instead of 'the place has'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, such as 'make up some time', but occasional errors in word choice and collocations prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Communication is never impeded by these vocabulary slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which is exceptionaly beautiful') and conditional or temporal clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, including missing articles ('place is exactly', 'garden in the house'), subject-verb agreement issues ('this place have'), and minor prepositional errors ('hope to you make up'). Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the errors do not impede communication. The control over grammar is characteristic of a mid-band level, showing reasonable attempts at complexity alongside basic slips.
