Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Friend,

I hope you are doing welloing well! I am writing to tell you about my newly house. As I rented a house near a lake for the summer season.

I am very curious to describe about my house. As I rented a 2 BHK house in Goa with attached washroom, a living room, a kitchen, also including a terrace. It is a fully furnished house with all necessary equipments.

I am very excited for this summer because it is just like dream comes true for me. I want to spend my maximum time near by lake with my family. I also think I have to carry a boat with me for boat riding.

If possible, please come to my house in weekends with your family. So, we all have a gathering together and we can also plan a bbq session for enjoyment.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,

Nitika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. The student describes the rented house ('2 BHK house in Goa with attached washroom... fully furnished'), explains how they are spending their time ('want to spend my maximum time near by lake with my family'), and invites a friend for a visit ('please come to my house in weekends'). However, some of the ideas are underdeveloped and the tone and purpose of the letter are slightly impacted by unnatural phrasing. The purpose is nonetheless clear and all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement with standard letter formatting, opening with 'Dear Friend' and closing appropriately. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, house description, activities, and invitation. However, logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices, such as the repetitive use of 'As I rented' and 'As I'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, but the overall progression remains coherent enough for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'fully furnished' and 'bbq session'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'newly house' instead of 'new house', 'curious to describe about', and 'equipments' (equipment is uncountable). These inaccuracies reflect a limited resource with frequent minor errors, but they do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If possible, please come...'). However, there are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and preposition issues like 'doing welloing well!', 'near by lake', and 'in weekends' instead of 'on weekends'. Complex structures are often faulty, and the frequency of errors causes some difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for a Band 5.0.
