Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Lovepreet,

I hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about the new house that I recently bought. The exact location is 25 Beasley Crescent, beside the lake. This is a double-story house with a white ceramic exterior. Its backyard covers a 100-square-meter area, including a swimming pool, garden, and fish pond. It has a beautiful terrace with an uninterrupted view of the lake.

I prefer spending leisure time mostly on the terrace, as it not only gives me peace but also takes me into another world for some time. The reason is its wonderful view of the lake and the slow wind that I enjoy every day with a cup of tea.

I would be so glad to show you my new home. If you get a chance, then visit my new home anytime, since it is not too far from your place. It is about 20 km away from your home. It will take only a 20-25 min drive to my home. I will wait for you to come.

best wishes

Anu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student has adequately covered all three bullet points required by the task, describing the property, explaining how time is spent, and issuing an invitation to a friend. However, there is a minor contradiction in the context: the prompt states that you have 'rented a house', whereas the student writes, 'the new house that I recently bought.' Despite this shift from renting to buying, the response fully addresses the communicative purpose of a friendly letter. The details about the house, such as the 'white ceramic exterior' and 'swimming pool, garden, and fish pond', are vivid, and the description of spending time on the terrace is well-developed. The tone is appropriate for writing to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. Therefore, the response successfully satisfies the core requirements of Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped sensibly into paragraphs: the first paragraph introduces the house and its features, the second details leisure activities, and the final paragraph provides the invitation and travel details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices are handled adequately, with words like 'Its', 'The reason is', and 'If you get a chance' providing appropriate links between sentences and clauses. Referencing is generally clear, such as 'It is about 20 km away from your home' referring back to the friend's place. While cohesion is somewhat straightforward rather than sophisticated, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'uninterrupted view', 'ceramic exterior', and 'leisure time' show an ability to use less common lexical items with decent awareness of collocation. There are some repetitive patterns, such as the repeated use of 'home' and 'house' in close proximity (e.g., 'new house', 'new home'), and minor awkwardness like 'slow wind' instead of 'gentle breeze'. However, spelling is accurate and word choice is generally natural enough to communicate ideas smoothly without causing any strain for the reader. The vocabulary used is adequate to achieve a Band 6.0 or solid 6.5, leaning towards the functional range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples of complex sentences include 'I prefer spending leisure time mostly on the terrace, as it not only gives me peace but also takes me into another world for some time.' Punctuation and verb tenses are generally handled well, with correct conditional usage ('If you get a chance, then visit...') and appropriate prepositional phrases. While there are a few slightly repetitive sentence starters and minor stylistic lapses, there are frequent error-free sentences, and the occasional minor inaccuracies do not impede communication at all. The grammar reflects solid command suited for a Band 7.0.
