Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student has successfully covered all three bullet points from the prompt: describing the rented house, explaining how time is spent there, and inviting the friend to visit. The tone is appropriately informal for a letter to a friend. However, the response falls significantly short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 99 words. Due to this substantial negative deviation from the word count requirement, Task Achievement cannot exceed Band 5.0. Furthermore, the ideas are quite brief and lack full development and extension, which aligns with the lower band descriptors where parts of the task are only minimally or partially expanded upon.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter maintains a basic overarching structure with an appropriate opening greeting and brief logical progression from describing the house to daily activities and finally the invitation. However, paragraphing is poorly managed; almost the entire body of the letter is compressed into run-on sentences and a single massive paragraph. Cohesive devices are extremely basic and repetitive (such as 'and', 'i', and 'while'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation is largely neglected, making the flow somewhat mechanical and choppy. This performance corresponds well to Band 5, where organisation lacks clear progression and cohesive devices are inadequate or inaccurate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited, basic vocabulary appropriate for everyday topics, but there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the writing (e.g., 'recantly', 'vantilated', 'beautuful', 'peacful', 'listing'). Less common lexical items are attempted but misused or incorrectly spelled. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning of the message, the frequent errors in spelling and collocation can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing this submission firmly in the Band 5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses with 'while' and 'occasinally'. However, grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in basic punctuation, capitalization ('im', 'i'), subject-verb agreement ('the house look'), and tense consistency ('i used to spend my time to sit', 'i cooked... and enjoy'). Complex structures are often faulty. Because errors are frequent and noticeable throughout the short text, though they do not completely impede communication, this performance merits a Band 5.0 for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
