Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Darshan,
I hope everything is going well for you and your family. I am incredibly excited to tell you that I have rented a house near the Ontario lake in Burlington to enjoy sunny days this year. This house has big entrance with triple door garage to park our cars in it and also has large swimming pool on the right side of the house. Once you enter the house you will find yourself surrounding with plants and flowers.
I count myself so fortunate to rent this house. Most evenings, my wife, Sam and I sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee, admiring the serene lake and watching the sun set over the water.
You should come and stay with us sometime this summer. We will do barbeque and will have some wine with that and later on if you want will go out for a walk on lakeshore.
I can't wait to see you! Catch up soon!
Best Regards,
Varshil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your letter successfully covers all the required bullet points of the task. You provide a clear description of the house, mentioning its features like the entrance and the swimming pool, and you explain how you spend your time there, such as sitting on the balcony in the evenings. You also include a warm invitation for your friend to visit. All parts are addressed clearly, and the tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a general task. However, some ideas, such as the description of the house surroundings, tend to be slightly over-generalised or lack further extension, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher standard, you could expand more vividly on the atmosphere or specific activities you enjoy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a friendly opening, move smoothly through the description of the house and your daily routine, and conclude with an invitation and warm sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the house details, your evening routine, and the invitation. You make use of some cohesive devices flexibly, such as 'Most evenings' and 'Once you enter the house'. To move to an even higher level, you could introduce a wider range of sophisticated linking words and ensure referencing is consistently seamless throughout all paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You display a sufficient vocabulary range to communicate your ideas with reasonable precision. You use some effective descriptive phrases, such as 'serene lake', 'triple door garage', and 'fortunate to rent this house'. There are, however, a few minor word choice and collocation slips, such as referring to 'the Ontario lake' instead of 'Lake Ontario', and saying 'surrounding with plants' instead of 'surrounded by plants'. These minor errors show an attempt at less common vocabulary with occasional inaccuracies, which are typical for this band level. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on more precise collocations and natural phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'Once you enter the house you will find yourself...' and 'if you want will go out for a walk'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing prepositions or articles ('We will do barbeque' instead of 'a barbeque', and 'on lakeshore' instead of 'on the lakeshore'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your message easily. To improve further, aim for greater precision in article usage and prepositions while increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
