Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Arsh,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to tell you about the house I have rented near the lake for the summer.

The house is quite beautiful and comfortable. I has two bedrooms, a spacious living room, a modern kitchen and small garden. There is also a balcony overlooking the lake which is my favourite part of this house.

Moreover, I am spending my time here by enjoying different activities. In the morning, I usually go for a work around the lake, and sometimes I go for a swimming. In the afternoon, I relax in the garden read the books. In the evening, I enjoy cooking dinner and watching the sunset from the balcony.

Additionally, I would like to invite you to visit my place and we can enjoy allot here. You could stay with me for a few days and we could explore the area, have a picnic and enjoy the lake toegther

Best wishes,

Ritika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three parts of the prompt in a natural, friendly tone suited to a General Training letter. You clearly describe the rented lakeside house by mentioning details like the two bedrooms, modern kitchen, and the balcony overlooking the lake. Furthermore, you effectively explain how you spend your time through daily routines such as morning walks and evening cooking, and you wrap up with a warm and clear invitation for your friend to visit. All bullet points are fully addressed, and ideas are extended with relevant supporting details, meeting all the requirements of this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from your opening greeting down to the final sign-off. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, starting with the description of the house, moving into your daily activities, and concluding with the invitation. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In the morning', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader smoothly through the text, although occasional minor awkwardness in referencing appears, keeping the cohesion within a standard, well-structured framework.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating everyday terms along with some less common phrases like 'overlooking the lake' and 'spacious living room'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'allot' instead of 'a lot' and 'toegther' instead of 'together'. Additionally, some word choices show mild unnatural collocation or form, such as 'go for a work' instead of 'go for a walk' and 'garden read the books' which misses a preposition, demonstrating some limitation in lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses using 'which' and introductory prepositional phrases. You show reasonable control over basic tenses and punctuation, but there are some grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the text. For instance, there is a pronoun agreement error ('I has two bedrooms' instead of 'It has') and an article omission ('and small garden' instead of 'and a small garden'). These errors occur occasionally and do not impede communication, allowing your message to remain clear to the reader.
