Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Hitesh,

Hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to invite you to my new rental summer house at Castle beach. As I promised you that I shall be moving in June, yet I got the keys in March luckly.

The house is just renovated. It has double garage with long driveway in front which is attatched with garden area. We can see the sea from all rooms of the house as it has glass walls in back of the house. The house is in 26 acres and it includes 4 bedrooms, a deck, a swimming pool and 3 muskoka chairs with open and close kitchen.

Most of the time I like to do yoga in my backyard and I like to have sounds of waves of the sea while I am in the kitchen. I mostly do all the work form the livingroom as it has the biggest window to enjoy sunshine.I always opens a beer after work and missing you everyday in the chair besides me.

Hope I will see you soon to enjoy some time together.

Yours faithfully,

John Martin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You describe the house in terms of its location, rooms, and features such as 'glass walls' and a 'swimming pool', explain how you are spending your time through activities like yoga and working from the living room, and warmly invite your friend to visit. The ideas presented are generally relevant and clear, which fully satisfies the requirements of the lower band level. However, to move closer to a fully developed response, some parts could be extended further with more elaborate descriptions or richer details about the surrounding lake area. The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a letter to a friend, although the closing sign-off 'Yours faithfully' is slightly too formal and would be better suited as 'Best wishes' or 'Yours sincerely' for someone you know well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving logically from the initial invitation and description of the house to your daily routine and the final welcome. Paragraphing is used reasonably well to separate distinct themes, such as the house features in the second paragraph and daily activities in the third. However, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical or simple, relying on basic connectors or repetitive sentence openings like 'The house is...' and 'I mostly...'. Referencing could also be smoother, as some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt. To reach a higher level, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing within and between paragraphs flows naturally without interrupting the narrative progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate vocabulary range is employed to complete the task successfully. You attempt some less common items and descriptive phrases, such as 'double garage', 'long driveway', and 'muskoka chairs', which fit the context nicely. However, there are some noticeable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes that reveal a lack of precision, such as 'luckly' instead of 'luckily', 'attatched' instead of 'attached', and using 'form' instead of 'from'. Additionally, phrases like 'open and close kitchen' are slightly unnatural compared to standard phrasing like 'open-plan kitchen'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. To improve your lexical score, focus on accurate spelling, more natural collocations, and widening your range of precise vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, reflecting an adequate control of sentence structures. You successfully use relative clauses and compound sentences, such as 'The house is in 26 acres and it includes 4 bedrooms...'. However, there are several grammar and punctuation errors scattered throughout the text. These include tense inconsistencies and verb form issues, such as 'As I promised you that I shall be moving in June, yet I got the keys in March', articles missing or misused in expressions like 'in livingroom', and subject-verb agreement errors like 'I always opens a beer'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak, particularly with missing commas in compound structures or introductory elements. These errors occur frequently enough to occasionally disrupt the flow, meaning you need to pay closer attention to grammatical accuracy and sentence control to reach the next band.
