Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Frank,
How have you been? I hope you and your kids are well. I am writing to share an exiciting news with you. For this summer, I have rented a bamboo house at mountain area near Banff.
Let me describe a whole house to keep you intersted! First of all, you will defenetly enjoy the area of bamboo house, as it resides in the middle of Solang velly. I would not get enough than this house, because I can see the beautiful view of various spacies of flowers and trees from the balcony. Moreover, it has multiple emenities such as, sauna, hot tub, tennis ground and barbeque area. I know your kids would like this kind of a summer vacation.
I would like to tell you my daily routine at this home. In the morning, I am enjoying a brids sound from my room, which wakes me up everyday. After, I go to see a sun rise from the highetst view point of a mountain. I generally take a gandola ride for that, as you know I am bad at a hiking and tracking. After which, in the afternoon I usually watch nexflix, followed by prepating for the evening meal. At night we are doing camp fire, can you imagine this?
I am inviting you to visit our place for this summer, as you will feel a warm touching experience with us. Also, I would love your company as always.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully covered all parts of the prompt by describing the house, outlining your daily routine, and inviting your friend to visit. Your ideas are relevant and convey a clear picture of your summer getaway. However, some areas are more fully developed than others. For example, while the description of the house amenities and your daily activities are quite detailed, the description of the house itself is somewhat generalized, mentioning it is a bamboo house in a mountain area rather than detailing its specific rooms or layout. To reach a higher level, every bullet point requires equally deep elaboration, ensuring all aspects of the prompt receive balanced and thorough development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You effectively used appropriate paragraphing to separate different themes, such as the introduction, the house description, your daily routine, and the final invitation. You also employed various cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'First of all,' 'Moreover,' 'After,' and 'At night.' Although referencing and paragraph transitions generally flow smoothly, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'After' and 'After which' to sequence morning and afternoon events. Managing these transitions with greater variety would enhance the overall flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common expressions such as 'amenities,' 'view point,' and 'gandola ride.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout your response that place this section in the mid-range. Examples of spelling errors include 'exiciting,' 'defenetly,' 'velly,' 'spacies,' 'emenities,' 'highetst,' 'gandola,' 'hiking and tracking' (unnecessary noun phrase), 'nexflix,' 'prepating,' and 'camp fire.' Additionally, phrases like 'share an exciting news' contain countability issues ('news' is uncountable). While these errors do not impede overall communication, improving your precision and spelling accuracy is essential for higher achievement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You successfully utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses and conditional structures such as 'as you know I am bad at a hiking and tracking' and 'can you imagine this?'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include article misuse ('a whole house,' 'the area of bamboo house,' 'a sun rise'), preposition errors ('at mountain area'), and tense or verb pattern inconsistencies ('I am enjoying a brids sound,' 'we are doing camp fire'). Your punctuation is generally functional, but managing complex structures with fewer grammatical lapses will help elevate your control over sentence mechanics.
