Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sammy,
How are you doing? It's been ages since we met. I'm writing this letter to tell you about this house that I rented by a beautiful lake for this summer.
It is a massive house, with 6 fully furnished rooms. Additionally, it has a rooftop swimming pool too! I have already checked with the landlord about pets and it is a petfriendly premise that comes with a lawn and backyard!
I play with my pet in the backyard and mostly go for a swin in the evening. The lake has crystal clear water, so I enjoy finishing. Moreover, i mostly spend my time at the rooftop as it has scenic views.
I'm thinking to invite all of our friends, so that we'll can catch up and since it's for summers, its going to be convinient for all of us to join. I would love if you will come. I would be waiting for your letter.
Lots of love,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by describing the rented house, explaining how time is spent there, and extending a warm invitation to the friend. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly from the opening 'Dear Sammy' to the closing sign-off. Ideas are clearly presented and extended, such as detailing the house's features like the rooftop pool and pet-friendly lawn, and describing daily activities including swimming and fishing in the crystal-clear lake. While the development of some points leans slightly towards generalisation, all requirements of the task are well covered, demonstrating a clear understanding of the prompt's purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from describing the accommodation to daily routines and finally extending the invitation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different topics, such as the house description in the second paragraph and leisure activities in the third. Cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'so' are employed to link ideas, although referencing and linking feel somewhat mechanical at times. This response fully meets the requirements of the lower band by organising information logically, while also showing some characteristics of higher performance through its straightforward progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning with common expressions like 'massive house', 'scenic views', and 'crystal clear water'. There are attempts to use less common items and descriptive phrases, though some lexical errors and typos are present, such as 'petfriendly', 'finishing' instead of 'fishing', and 'convinient'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur but they do not impede communication. The lexical range provides just enough flexibility for the task, though more precise control over word forms and spelling is needed to reach a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-style conjunctions such as 'so that we'll can catch up'. There are several noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including lowercase 'i', the awkward verb construction 'we'll can', minor article omissions, and a comma splice in 'for summers, its going to be'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. The control over grammar is consistent with a mix of basic and moderately complex structures, representing a solid foundation with occasional slip-ups.
