Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jack,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am glad to share with you that we have rented a house near the lake for spending our quality summer time over there.

The house is very spacious with four bedrooms and a big backyard. The kitchen is also very big. There is no issue of storage in this house. We are planning to organize a small get together with our close friends and family members. We will be doing barbeque in the evening and we are also planning to play some games with closed ones. There is also a bar in the basement.

As we are spending our summers here, I would like to invite you over the weekend so that we can enjoy our friends' time. I also request you to bring your family so that they can enjoy together.

We are planning to live here for the whole summer. I will be waiting for you to come and have a look at our new house.

Hoping to see you soon.

Yours truely,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You successfully addressed all parts of the letter prompt, including a description of the house, how you are spending your time there, and an invitation to your friend. However, some areas are developed more fully than others. While the description of the house and the invitation are clearly presented, the part of the task regarding how you are spending your time is somewhat limited and briefly treated, primarily mentioning a planned get-together and a bar in the basement rather than everyday activities. To reach the next level, all bullet points require more extended and fully supported ideas throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the beginning. You made a good attempt to structure the letter into logical paragraphs representing different parts of the prompt. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or basic, such as the repeated use of 'There is' ('There is no issue', 'There is also a bar', 'There is also'). Referencing and transitions between sentences could be smoother to show a clearer progression of ideas. To improve, work on varying your sentence openings and using a wider range of cohesive devices naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your ideas with common terms like 'spacious', 'backyard', and 'basement'. You also attempted some less common phrases, though there were occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'enjoy our friends' time' instead of enjoying time with friends, and the spelling error in the sign-off 'Yours truely' instead of truly. These errors do not impede communication. To move up a band, aim to incorporate more precise lexical items and idiomatic expressions naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('a house near the lake') and conditional or purpose clauses ('so that we can enjoy'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'quality summer time over there' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'invite you over the weekend'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your message easily. For a higher score, you should showcase a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater control and fewer slips.
