Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smith,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I have rented a huge house by a lake and would like to invite you to come and stay here with me. It's a five bedroom house with a beautiful garden. The house is surrounded by colourful flowers. Furthermore, I love the exterior of the house. It's an old building and gives you a vibe of a castle. There are also swings in the garden for the children.

Moreover, we are living the best days of our lives. In the morning we do fishing and during the day we explore the woods. We've also brought our bicycles along with us so in the evening we go to the city area. which is thirty minutes away from the house for shopping. At night we do barbeque and enjoy the food and amazing weather.

I would like you to come here with your family and stay with us. I am sure we'll have great fun.

Many thanks,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly describe the rented lakeside house by mentioning its size, rooms, and garden features like the castle vibe and children's swings. You also describe how you are spending your time through activities such as fishing, exploring woods, cycling to the city, and having evening barbecues. Finally, you successfully extend an invitation to your friend and their family. The ideas are relevant and generally well-extended, showing a clear purpose throughout the letter, although some aspects like the daily activities could have been slightly more elaborated to reach the highest performance levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall logical arrangement and progression. Information is grouped appropriately into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs dealing with the house and daily routines, and a friendly concluding invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'At night' are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the reader can follow the letter smoothly from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating everyday terms along with attempts at less common phrasing, such as 'colourful flowers', 'exterior of the house', and 'amazing weather'. There are some minor word choice and collocation tendencies, such as 'we do fishing' instead of 'we go fishing', but these vocabulary choices and minor slips do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and precise idiomatic expressions suited to a friendly correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses and compound-complex sentences (e.g., 'The house is surrounded by colourful flowers' and 'It's an old building and gives you a vibe of a castle'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably a sentence fragment in 'city area. which is thirty minutes away', but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Good control over present and future tenses is maintained throughout.
