Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rani,

I hope you are doing well and enjoying your new job. It's been a while since we last talked, so I decided to write this letter to catch up with you.

I have rented a house near the lake for a week to relax and calm myself after months of a demanding work schedule. It is situated on the outskirts and far from the city noise, which makes it a perfect place to relax. This house has a couple of spacious rooms and a huge TV in the living room.

I go for a morning walk and enjoy being in the woods to breathe fresh air. By the evening, I have a barbecue while enjoying the beautiful sunset.

Since you are also on vacation, why do not you come for a few days here?. I promise you will definitely enjoy it, and we will go fishing in the lake.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Manish

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You begin by describing the house, noting details such as its location on the outskirts, its spacious rooms, and the huge TV in the living room. You then explain how you spend your time there, mentioning morning walks in the woods and evening barbecues while watching the sunset. Finally, you clearly extend an invitation to your friend Rani to visit for a few days. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant and clear ideas. To push into higher bands, some of these descriptions could be slightly more extended and developed with even richer detail, but your current coverage is fully appropriate and clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You make smooth transitions from your opening greetings to the description of the house, how you spend your time, the invitation, and finally the closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct topic. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as referencing ('It is situated', 'This house') and time markers ('By the evening', 'Since you are also on vacation'). To achieve an even higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of more sophisticated cohesive links and ensure that referencing is exceptionally seamless, but your current arrangement makes your letter very easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your message with clarity. You attempt some less common items and descriptive phrases, such as 'demanding work schedule', 'outskirts', and 'fresh air'. Your word choices are generally natural and communicate your meaning well, without any spelling errors that might impede the reader. However, some of your vocabulary remains slightly standard or repetitive, such as using 'relax' twice in close proximity ('to relax and calm myself', 'perfect place to relax'). To reach higher bands, you would need to use a wider range of sophisticated, less common lexical items and idiomatic language with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, producing a strong mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully handle various structures, such as conditional or causal clauses ('Since you are also on vacation, why do not you come for a few days here?.') and relative clauses ('which makes it a perfect place to relax'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and your verb tenses are handled well overall, shifting smoothly between present situations and past context. A minor punctuation slip occurs at the end of your invitation sentence with a superfluous period before the question mark. To attain higher bands, you would need an even broader variety of complex structures deployed with absolute consistency and virtually no minor technical errors.
