Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

Hi, how are you? I am writing to about a house that I have rented near a lake for this summer.

I have rented a beautiful two bedroom house near a Slyvon lake and it has a big garden. In a garden there are lot of flowers as well as green vegetables have grown and also there is a small pond which is looking a very nice.

I spend my evening time in gardening and watering the plants. On weekend I spend time with my family members and enjoy the view of a lake in the morning as well as in the evening. Sometimes, in the evening I go for jogging with my husband and explore some places near by a lake. Also, I enjoy breakfast in my new home with my family.

I would happy if you visit my new house and spend some time with me. It is a good opportunity for us to spend time together on weekend in busy schdeule. I would happy to recall our college memories and enjoy our past movements.

I hope you would like to visit my new home and spend time with me.

Best wishes,

Jagjit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a General Training letter. The house is described with details such as 'a beautiful two bedroom house' and a 'big garden with a small pond'. Daily activities are clearly outlined, including gardening and jogging near the lake with family, and a warm invitation is extended to the friend at the end of the letter. The purpose of the communication is transparent and maintained throughout, with an appropriate semi-formal tone. While some ideas like the activities are slightly general, all bullet points are well covered and supported with relevant details, creating a clear picture of the situation for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of ideas. The message is broken down into appropriate paragraphs, separating the greeting, the description of the house, daily routines, the invitation, and the sign-off. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the repetitive use of transitions like 'Also' and 'And' to link sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between some sentences could be smoother with more varied cohesive devices. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct topics, yet the transition of ideas within paragraphs occasionally feels abrupt.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating sufficient range to communicate basic concepts about the house and daily activities. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'opportunity', 'explore', and 'memories', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and phrasing. Examples include 'writing to about', 'Slyvon lake', 'looking a very nice', 'busy schdeule', and 'past movements' instead of 'moments'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips are noticeable and occasionally cause mild difficulty for the reader, but communication remains clear overall.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses with 'which' and temporal clauses with 'when' or 'while'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, including article misuse ('In a garden', 'view of a lake'), prepositions ('near by a lake', 'on weekend'), and verb forms ('I would happy'). These errors, along with occasional issues in agreement and sentence construction, persist throughout the text. Although the meaning is generally understandable, the grammar features frequent inaccuracies that draw attention.
