Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anjali,
I hope you are doing well! I want to tell you about my new rented house which is beside a lake and invite you to visit me.
The house is quite spacious with a beautiful backyard, and it has two bedrooms with en suites. A living room is equipped with a large screen and brown couch. In addition, from the window of the bedroom, there is a breathtaking view of the lake.
I've been living here for the past ten days and planning to stay here for the summer season. Every amenity is at walking distance. In the afternoon, I tend to go to the lake daily and soak the sunlight after swimming. Everyday I look at the sunset view from the window which gives me immense relaxation.
I'd like to invite you visit my home on the upcoming weekend. I assure you that we will enjoy a lot on saturdays and sundays. We will visit nearby popular attractions such as the CN tower and the eaten center too.
I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best love,
Prabh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task. You clearly described the house by mentioning features such as the two bedrooms with en suites, the living room setup, and the lake view. You also described how you are spending your time there by detailing your daily routine of walking, swimming, and watching the sunset. Finally, you included a clear invitation for your friend to visit on the upcoming weekend and visit local attractions. While your ideas are extended and supported, some aspects, such as the description of your daily activities, tend to generalise rather than providing deeply extended narrative details, which keeps your response well-positioned at this level. To reach a higher standard, you could expand further on how you spend your time with more vivid personal anecdotes or specific descriptions of the local area.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You have structured your response into logical paragraphs, beginning with an appropriate opening greeting and a clear statement of purpose, followed by distinct paragraphs for the house description, your daily routine, and the invitation. You use cohesive devices flexibly and appropriately, such as 'In addition', 'For the past ten days', and 'Everyday', though transitioning between sentences could sometimes be smoother to achieve a more natural flow. Referencing is generally clear, helping the reader easily follow the progression of your ideas from your arrival at the house to your plans for the weekend. To improve further, ensure that every cohesive link feels entirely natural rather than mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to describe the house and your daily activities with some precision. You attempted less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'breathtaking view', 'spacious', and 'immense relaxation', demonstrating an awareness of style appropriate for an informal letter. However, there are some occasional word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'soak the sunlight' instead of 'soak up the sun' or 'bask in the sun', and minor capitalization issues with proper nouns like 'CN tower' and 'eaten center' (Eaton Centre). These minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering natural collocations and precise spelling for proper nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as 'I've been living here for the past ten days and planning to stay here for the summer season' and 'Every amenity is at walking distance.' There is generally good control of grammar and punctuation, and your sentences are mostly clear. However, there are a few minor grammatical errors, such as missing an article in 'invite you [to] visit my home' and capitalization errors like 'saturdays and sundays'. Furthermore, while you attempt complex structures, some phrasing is slightly repetitive in structure. You achieve a solid mix of error-free sentences and well-controlled grammar, though a few persistent minor slip-ups remain. To reach the next level, incorporate a wider variety of advanced subordinate clauses while eliminating minor punctuation and article omissions.
