Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sarah,

How have you been doing? I am very excited to share about the wonderful and pleasant experience I am having in my new rented apartment, beside a lakeshore.

The apartment I am living in right now is not only spacious but also well-lit. It has a balcony with chairs and a mini garden planted with beautiful seasonal flowers.

Every evening, I try to go for a small walk alongwith the lakeshore in order to get some fresh air. On weekends paticularly, I rent a boat to enjoy water sport. Sometimes, I go to nearby football ground to play. Also, there is a famous cafe where I enjoy going quite a few times in a month.

I would like to invite you to my place for next weekend. As we both can enjoy multiple activities with each others company. I would not mind if you can stay for couple of days at my place.

Looking forward to a positive response.

Yours lovingly,

Himanshu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining an appropriate friendly tone throughout the letter. The description of the house is well-conveyed with details about the spacious rooms, balcony, and mini garden. The way you spend your time is also clearly outlined, mentioning evening walks along the lakeshore, weekend boat rentals, and visits to a local cafe. Finally, the invitation to your friend for the next weekend is appropriately extended. To reach a higher band, some of these ideas could be further elaborated with richer details regarding your daily routines or specific experiences at the lake to provide a fully rounded and deeply illustrative picture.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate different elements of your letter, such as the description of the accommodation, your daily and weekend activities, and the invitation to your friend. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Every evening', 'On weekends particularly', and 'Also', which help guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. For further improvement towards higher bands, referencing and cohesive links could be handled with even greater flexibility, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences, particularly around the discussion of your weekend plans and activities.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'seasonal flowers', 'lakeshore', and 'spacious'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'share about' instead of simply 'share', 'alongwith' as a single word, and 'water sport' instead of the plural 'water sports'. Additionally, phrases like 'couple of days' would benefit from a preceding article. These occasional lexical slips mean your vocabulary is sufficient for clear communication, but reaching a higher level requires more precise word choices, idiomatic expressions, and consistent accuracy in collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'The apartment I am living in right now is not only spacious but also well-lit' effectively. There is generally good control of sentence boundaries and punctuation. However, there are some minor grammatical errors present, such as fragmenting the final part of your invitation sentence: 'As we both can enjoy multiple activities with each others company.' This dependent clause should be connected to the main sentence or revised. Other minor errors include the missing apostrophe in 'others company' and minor prepositional inconsistencies. To achieve a higher level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and flawless punctuation control.
