Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Harry,

Hope you are doing well. I want to tell you about my new house. I recently purchase a new house by the lake view. It's really peacefull here away form the city noise. The best feature in this house is it's TV lounge which has the wall size windows from where I enjoy the lake view. Other than this, it has 3 bedrooms and a open kitchen. Also a beautiful garden where I'm planning to place a grill for the BBQ parties.

Since this is away from the city, most of my time spent doing home chores or simply spending time near the lake, having coffee while enjying the nature. Altough sometimes I get bored because there is not much activities here which I can do. But this peaceful environment give me the chance to focus on my writing skills and now I'm working on my novel.

I wanted you to read it first. So why don't you come to my new house? We can have a BBQ party in my garden where we can grill the fishes fresh from the lake and I'll read the first draft of my novel to you. You can also spend some away from the city and feel the peace of this beautiful nature with me.

I'm adding the address on the stamp. Hope to see you soon.

Best Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points in the task: you describe the house and its lake-facing windows, explain that you spend time doing chores, enjoying the lake and writing a novel, and invite Harry to visit for a barbecue and a reading. The invitation is warm and gives your friend clear reasons to come. The house description is more developed than the account of your daily routine, which remains fairly general; for example, “most of my time” is spent on chores or by the lake, but you give few specific details about these activities. The barbecue and novel-reading plans add useful detail, though the invitation could be made more complete by suggesting when to visit or how long to stay. Overall, the purpose and tone are clear, with some ideas needing further development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the house, describe your routine, then invite Harry and close the message. Paragraphing helps separate these main points, and links such as “Since this is away from the city” and “So why don't you come” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Although sometimes I get bored” begins a contrast, but the following “But this peaceful environment” makes the transition feel repetitive; these ideas could be joined more naturally. The shift from describing the garden to your routine is also abrupt. A clearer link between the quiet setting and your writing would strengthen the progression. The closing reference to adding the address “on the stamp” is not clearly connected to the invitation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas and create a friendly tone, including “wall size windows,” “BBQ parties,” “first draft” and “peaceful environment.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “fresh from the lake.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word choices reduce accuracy: “peacefull,” “enjying,” “Altough,” and “form” are noticeable, while “lake view” and “spending some away from the city” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Some wording is repetitive, particularly references to peace and nature. To move beyond this level, check spelling carefully and build more precise collocations for describing the house, activities and invitation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the relative clause in “the wall size windows from where I enjoy the lake view” and the reason clause beginning “Since this is away from the city.” The message remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction are present. For example, “I recently purchase” needs a past-tense verb, “a open kitchen” needs the correct article, and “this peaceful environment give me” has a subject–verb agreement error. “Most of my time spent doing home chores” is missing a finite verb, while “Also a beautiful garden” is a sentence fragment. Review these patterns and aim to make complex sentences accurate as well as varied; clearer sentence boundaries would also improve control.
