Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Oly,

How have you been? I hope you are well.

I am writing to inform you that finally, I have been able to rent a house by the lake for this summer. I am so excited because I have always wanted to do this. The house is a charming two storey building shaped like a tree-top house and it is made of timber all through. It has two bedrooms all ensuite and a large balcony facing the lake.

I am going to spend my time there connecting with nature, sleeping and meditating, while easing off the accummulated years' stress. In the evenings I will join others to fish by the lake.

Oly, I would greatly appreciate it if you can spend this summer by the lake with me. I have paid and arranged everything so you do not have to worry about the financial cost. Come, let's have fun together and make memories.

Write to me as soon as you can. Do have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Lulu Og.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly covers all three requested points: you describe the timber, two-storey house and its lake-facing balcony, explain that you are relaxing, meditating and fishing, and make a warm invitation that removes concern about costs. The purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout, and details such as “I have paid and arranged everything” make the invitation practical. The description and activities are relevant, though the account of how you spend your time is somewhat general; one specific example of a day or a shared activity would develop it further. To strengthen the response, make the invitation more concrete by suggesting when your friend could arrive or what you could do together.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear, sensible progression: you introduce the rental, describe the house, move to your activities, and then invite Oly to visit. Paragraphing supports these shifts, while phrases such as “In the evenings” and “so you do not have to worry” help connect details and clarify relationships. The opening and closing also suit a personal letter. Cohesion is generally effective, although the activities paragraph is brief and the transition from relaxing to fishing could be developed more smoothly. A more explicit link between the lake setting and your plans, or a sentence describing a typical day, would make the progression feel more fully connected rather than simply listing activities.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the setting and communicate enthusiasm, including “charming,” “timber,” “balcony facing the lake,” and “make memories.” These choices give the house a clear image and help maintain a warm, personal tone. There are occasional imprecise or unnatural expressions: “connecting with nature” is understandable but broad, while “easing off the accumulated years’ stress” is not a natural collocation. “All through” is also less idiomatic than “throughout.” The spelling “accummulated” should be corrected to “accumulated.” More precise phrases for relaxation and outdoor activities would add flexibility and naturalness while preserving the friendly style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The letter includes a useful variety of sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate, such as “The house is a charming two storey building shaped like a tree-top house” and “I have paid and arranged everything so you do not have to worry about the financial cost.” You also use subordinate clauses and infinitive structures effectively. A few grammatical choices need attention: “I would greatly appreciate it if you can spend” would be more consistent as “if you could spend,” and “two bedrooms all ensuite” would read more clearly as “two bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms.” The sentence beginning “I am going to spend my time there…” also combines several activities in a slightly awkward structure. Refining these points would improve control without changing the clear meaning.
