Student answer (Band 4.5)
Dear Friend,
I hope you are doing well. I am very excited to inform you that I have rented a new house by a lake. As I have discussed with you that I want a house near my office I found that in just 60,000 PKR monthly.
The elevation of this house is very attractive with beige and brown contrast. It has a garage for 1 car and one bike that is suitable for any small family like me. There is a lawn beside garage that is full of beautiful flowers and plants. T.V. lounge is very spacoius with open kitchen on the left side. there is a window in the kitchen opens outside
It has 2 bedrooms with attached washrooms. The side lobby is also very wide for laundry. i am sure

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You begin appropriately and give relevant details about the rented house, including its colours, garage, garden, kitchen and bedrooms. However, the response is incomplete: it does not describe how you are spending your time by the lake or invite your friend to visit, so two key parts of the task are missing. The house description also ends abruptly with “i am sure,” leaving the letter unfinished. The response contains 133 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 150; this limits how fully you can develop the requested information. To improve, complete all three bullet points and add a clear, friendly invitation with practical details such as when your friend could come and what you could do together.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The details about the house are presented in a generally understandable order, moving from its exterior to the garage and garden, then to the living area and bedrooms. This gives the reader some sense of progression. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, and the final fragment, “i am sure,” interrupts the flow rather than completing an idea. Connections between details are also limited, with several short statements placed next to one another without clear transitions. Organise the letter into paragraphs—for example, one for the house, one for your activities, and one for the invitation—and use simple linking phrases to make the progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary to describe a home, including “beige and brown contrast,” “lawn,” “attached washrooms,” and “open kitchen.” These choices help convey specific features rather than relying only on basic words. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “The elevation of this house” for its exterior appearance and “T.V. lounge” in this context. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “spacoius.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main description, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Choose familiar, accurate collocations and check spelling; adding vocabulary for lakeside activities would also help address the full task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “As I have discussed with you that I want a house near my office…” This shows an effort to vary sentence forms, but the construction is faulty and would be clearer as two clauses without “that.” Other errors include “There is a window in the kitchen opens outside,” which needs a relative clause or a separate sentence, and inconsistent capitalisation at the start of “there” and “i.” The final “i am sure” is also incomplete. These problems sometimes make the reader pause, although the main house details remain understandable. Practise complete sentence structures and check verb forms, clause links, and capital letters.
