Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear friend,

Hope you are having a great summer. This summer, I was aiming to spend time close to the nature and hence, I have rented out a house by a lake for the summer.

It will be very difficult to explain in words how "silence" can be so soothing. The trees around the lake, the sound that the leaves made when the wind blows are undescribable and one should experience it personaly.

I am spending my time mostly by the lake, reading all the books that were in my bucket-list for long. Finally, I have now time to read without all the metropolitan busy ife. Trying the fresh and organic food and obviously, cooking on the woods rather an electric stove. You see, I am fully immersed in the nature.

If your schedule allows, please visit me for as long as you need. I am sure, you will also love to spend your time here.

Thanks,

Your friend.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The letter covers the three requested points: you explain that you rented a house by a lake, describe reading and cooking, and invite your friend to stay. The invitation, “please visit me for as long as you need,” is clear, and the peaceful setting gives the letter a personal purpose. However, the house itself is barely described: the trees and lake are mentioned, but there is little about the house’s rooms, facilities, or atmosphere. Some details about your routine are also brief, and the opening does not establish a specific friend or occasion. Develop the house description and add a concrete activity or detail to make the response more fully address the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable letter structure, moving from an introduction to the setting, your activities, and an invitation. Paragraph breaks help separate these topics, and phrases such as “Finally” and “If your schedule allows” guide the reader. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven. The description of the lake’s quietness shifts abruptly to the leaves, while the activities paragraph contains sentence fragments, including “Trying the fresh and organic food” and “You see, I am fully immersed in the nature.” These interrupt the flow and make connections between ideas less clear. Use complete sentences and link the house description more directly to how you spend your days.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant and expressive vocabulary, including “soothing,” “immersed,” and “bucket-list,” which help convey your enjoyment of the stay. The language is generally understandable, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “close to the nature,” “experience it personaly,” and “cooking on the woods.” There is also a spelling error in “personal y” (intended as “personally”) and a typo in “ife.” These slips make the writing less natural and precise. Aim for familiar, accurate combinations rather than forcing unusual phrasing, and check spelling carefully. For example, describe cooking “over a wood fire” and experiencing the scenery “in person.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mixture of simple and more extended sentences, for example, “If your schedule allows, please visit me for as long as you need.” Most of the message remains understandable, but control is inconsistent. “The sound that the leaves made when the wind blows” shifts tense within one clause, and “Finally, I have now time to read” has an incorrect word order. The fragments “Trying the fresh and organic food” and “You see, I am fully immersed in the nature” also show incomplete or awkward sentence construction. Use complete clauses, keep verb tenses consistent, and review article and word-order patterns. These changes would make the message smoother and more reliable.
