Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the bag that I lost yesterday while travelling on your taxi. I realized that when I reached reached my home, and also tried calling your driver to which he didn't respond or call back.

I was travelling from Walmart to my home in Pappa Bears Taxi, plated CYD 7612, around 6PM yesterday, and I lost my bag which I have kept in one of the pockets of my pant. I was sleeping during the ride and didn't realize that it oozed out of my pocket.

It was a black color tiny male hand bag, branded with Calvin Klein on the front, where I store some of my important and confidential documents, both private and work related. Additionally, I have kept my passport, and a small white board where my name and mobile number is printed on it.

I request you to kindly ask the driver to do a thorough check in the car and give me a call back, so that I can come and collect it as early as possible.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards

Gokul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how the bag was lost, provide a detailed description of the item, and include a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a business manager. The information provided is relevant and sufficient to allow the taxi company to identify the lost property. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the structure follows the conventions of a formal request letter effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'so that' to link ideas. While some transitions are simple, they are used effectively to maintain flow. The overall arrangement is coherent, and the relationship between the lost item and the request for help is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including specific terms like 'confidential documents' and 'thorough check'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'oozed out of my pocket' (which is more appropriate for liquids) and 'tiny male hand bag' (which sounds slightly unnatural). Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively. You successfully use formal language appropriate for a business correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as the repetition of 'reached' in the first paragraph and the tense error 'I have kept' (should be 'I had kept'). Additionally, 'to which he didn't respond' is slightly awkward; 'to which he did not respond' or 'but he did not respond' would be better. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, showing a good level of control.
