Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: explaining the loss, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the bag includes irrelevant details like the 'one-year warranty,' which does not help the manager identify the item. To improve, focus on more specific identifying features such as the color, material, or specific contents that would help the company locate it. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left in no doubt about the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'and' to connect sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to enhance the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the lack of more sophisticated cohesive links. Overall, the structure is functional and supports the message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey the necessary information clearly. There are some attempts at descriptive language, such as 'rough and tough characteristic,' though this is slightly unnatural in a formal context. Some word choices are imprecise, such as 'bring into your notice' instead of 'bring to your attention.' While the range is sufficient to communicate the situation, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, but the vocabulary remains somewhat limited to everyday, functional language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'if your company have' (should be 'has'), 'i' (should be capitalized 'I'), and 'picked my from' (should be 'picked me up from'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and preposition errors, such as 'forgot my bag from trunk.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalization, and more accurate use of prepositions.
