Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello Manager,

I am writing this letter to explain the problem which i faced last night when i rode in your taxi.

Actually, i booked the taxi by using the mobile application, Uber at 7 pm from Ludhiana to Delhi. I got an important phone call at 11.20 pm and i left the car once i reached at my destination while listening that call. Unfortuneatly, i forgot to pick up my bag.

It is of beige colour of " Adidas " brand. There are 2 black strips on it. It has a keychain of my name. It has all my important documents like my passport, my health card and business files.

I would make a humble request to you, please, solve this issue as soon as possible in order to mitigate the upcoming obstacles. I have an important appointment on 3 august, at 6.00 am, where i need my all business documents.

I would be very thankful to you in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Ramandeep Kaur .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: explaining how the bag was lost, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the opening salutation 'Hello Manager' is slightly informal; 'Dear Sir or Madam' was requested in the prompt, and the student should have followed that instruction precisely. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing sufficient detail to allow the manager to identify the item and understand the urgency of the situation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the incident to the description and finally the request for help. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Actually', 'Unfortuneatly', and 'In order to', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The overall structure is easy to follow, and the message is communicated effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the bag and the situation clearly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'mitigate the upcoming obstacles' which sounds slightly unnatural in this context, and 'listening that call' should be 'listening to that call'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. Spelling is generally accurate, with the exception of 'Unfortuneatly'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization of 'i' (which should always be 'I'), the misuse of articles ('the car' instead of 'a car'), and minor punctuation issues. While these errors are frequent, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, the student should focus on consistent capitalization and refining the use of articles and prepositions.
