Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Ramneet Kaur, I am writing this letter regarding my last ride in one of your taxis. I booked the taxi around 5pm from downtown to Kelowna airport. Booking number was R[redacted phone] and the taxi number was 4.

I by mistake left my bag in that taxi. The brand of my bag is coach and its colour is black. I placed the bag in the trunk of the car and forgot to take it while leaving. I am not worried of loosing my bag but my laptop was in it and it carries important documents which I cannot bare loosing it.

I would appreciate if you could help me finding it by contacting the driver of the cab. I would be happy to pay in-return if the driver would be able to give it to my address.

Thank you for you time. Looking forward for your positive response.

Yours Sincerely,

Ramneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: explaining how the bag was lost, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. The information provided, such as the booking number and taxi number, is relevant and helps to develop the response effectively. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the request for help is polite and direct. All requirements of the task are met, and the ideas are sufficiently extended to provide a complete and helpful communication.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the context of the ride to the incident, the description, and finally the request for action. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'I placed the bag...' and 'I would appreciate if...', which help the flow. While the transition between sentences is generally clear, the use of linking words could be slightly more varied to enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'loosing' instead of 'losing' and 'bare' instead of 'bear'. Additionally, 'in-return' is slightly awkward in this context. However, the writer uses specific details like 'downtown', 'trunk', and 'documents' effectively. The range is sufficient to communicate the situation without any significant misunderstanding, though more sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am not worried of loosing' (should be 'about losing'), 'help me finding it' (should be 'help me find it'), and 'Thank you for you time' (should be 'your time'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there is a comma splice in the first sentence ('My name is Ramneet Kaur, I am writing...'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication.
