Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing you regarding my lost bag while riding in your taxi yesterday night from downtown Toronto to home.
Firstly, I would like to justify how did I left my bag in your taxi. After I got into the cab at 7:30 PM yesterday,
I got call from my manager to check about important work since he was away from office. Therefore, I was busy talking and explaining client meeting of minutes. Meanwhile, I reached my resident and got down from the taxi without even noticing to carry back the bag.
About the bag, it’s purple in colour with two external zip locks and Adidas company logo you can see on the top right corner. There are some important agreement papers and HP laptop in it.
I would greatly appreciate if you can check with driver and lost and found counter and update me on priority. Once you get any information, kindly contact to below given number and I will be happy to collect from any place.
I hope to receive favourable response from you as early as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali Reddy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the loss of the bag, its description, and the request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. The response covers all requirements of the prompt well, providing sufficient detail about the bag's appearance and contents to facilitate identification. The structure is logical and follows the conventions of a formal request letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the explanation, description, and finally the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Therefore', and 'Meanwhile' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is logical, making the text easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, though it lacks a wide range of sophisticated or idiomatic expressions. Phrases like 'justify how did I left' and 'update me on priority' are slightly unnatural or grammatically awkward. However, the student successfully uses specific descriptive terms like 'external zip locks' and 'Adidas company logo' to convey the necessary information. The range is adequate for the task, but more precise collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors that slightly impede the flow, such as 'I am writing you regarding my lost bag' (should be 'writing to you'), 'justify how did I left' (should be 'explain how I left'), and 'reached my resident' (should be 'residence'). While the student attempts complex sentence structures, these are often marred by minor errors in verb tense or word choice. However, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the majority of the sentences are understandable.
