Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the bag which I leave in one of your taxi after my ride from office to home, yesterday. I realized that when I reached my home and thought of writing a letter to you before it is too late.

The bag is really important to me because it contains all my private and work related documents, which are highly confidential. I kept in my pant's pocket safely, and was sleeping throughout my ride. Nonetheless, it slipped through my pockets and I didn't realize that until I reached my home.

It was Calvin Klein's men's special edition hand bag. which is small in size, black in color and easy to fix in any kind of travel bags. Moreover, there is custom made badging with my name imprinted on it.

I request you to kindly look into my booking and communicate with the driver who drove me to my home. and also request you to return it to me at the earliest convenience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how the bag was lost, provide a detailed description of the item, and include a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the loss is logically consistent; for instance, mentioning that the bag was in your 'pant's pocket' is slightly confusing given that you later describe it as a 'hand bag'. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Nonetheless' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor punctuation errors, such as the fragmented sentence 'which is small in size...' and the incorrect use of a period before 'and also request'. Improving the use of transition words and ensuring that sentences are correctly linked rather than broken into fragments would enhance the overall cohesion. The progression of ideas from the incident to the description and finally the request is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'confidential', 'imprinted', and 'at the earliest convenience'. There are some minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'easy to fix in any kind of travel bags' (which sounds unnatural) and 'I leave in one of your taxi' (incorrect tense). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. To improve, focus on using more natural phrasing for describing objects and their features. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include tense errors ('I leave' instead of 'I left'), article usage ('in one of your taxi' instead of 'taxis'), and punctuation issues, such as starting a new sentence with 'which' after a period. While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage, as well as ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid fragments.
