Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam
I am writing this letter to bring your attention regarding one of my bag, which is lost in a taxi operated by you. Actually, yesterday it was rainy day and I was waiting for my ride at the time of 9pm because there was no access for public transportation. Moreover, I used my one hand for carrying my bag and the other one is for umbrella. When I reached at home, I just picked my umbrella and forgot my bag there.
Nextly, it was expensive bag of Gucci brand in blue colour. Honestly, this bag is precious for me not just because it is expensive, it is gifted to me by my husband on my 25th birthday. In addition to this, I kept all my identities in this bag , which helps me to find it .
Lastly, I would like to request you that please help me to solve this issue on early base. Looking forward to hear from you . If you need any help, let me know .
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Jyoti Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: explaining the loss, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the bag was lost is a bit repetitive, and the description of the bag could be more detailed to assist the manager in identifying it. While the purpose is clear, the letter would benefit from more precise information, such as the taxi number, the exact time of the journey, or the route taken, which would make the request more realistic and effective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a clear progression from the incident to the description and finally the request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the use of 'Nextly' and 'on early base'. While the overall structure is coherent, the transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow of the letter. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be strengthened by using a wider variety of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at using more specific vocabulary, such as 'precious' and 'identities', though 'identities' is likely a misuse of 'identification' or 'personal documents'. Some phrasing is unnatural, such as 'on early base' instead of 'as soon as possible'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the situation, there is a lack of flexibility and precision in word choice. The spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical range is limited to basic, functional language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'one of my bag' (should be 'one of my bags'), 'it was rainy day' (should be 'it was a rainy day'), and 'the other one is for umbrella' (should be 'the other was for my umbrella'). These errors are frequent but do not impede the reader's understanding of the situation. The control over verb tenses is inconsistent, shifting between past and present in ways that are not always grammatically sound. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the accuracy.
