Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to apprise you that I accidentally left my bag yesterday in taxi No. XYZ ABC at 400 pm. I booked the taxi from hotel Canva, 133 street to Rosemary,120 street. During my ride, I was on a conference call with office manager and the bag was on the front seat. However, I took all the luggage from the trunk but forgot the one kept on the front passenger seat.

Moreover, my bag is brown in colour with brand name Michael Kors and is medium size. It also has a teddy keychain hanging on the zip of my bag. Even inside the belt of the bag, my initials are also engraved. I tried to contact the driver but can not get hold of him.

Lastly, I request you to investigate the matter personally and reach out to your staff so that I can get my bag in time. There are some important documents inside the bag which I need it urgently.

Thankyou for your assistance and also let me know if you need any further information.

Sincerely

Monika Kadyan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the circumstances of the loss, provided a detailed description of the bag, and included a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands exactly what happened and what is required. No parts of the task were omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the first introduces the situation, the second describes the item, and the third provides the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The flow is natural, and the structure is appropriate for a formal business correspondence, making the message easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'apprise you', 'get hold of him', and 'investigate the matter personally' are appropriate for the formal context. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there is room for slightly more sophisticated collocations to elevate the writing further. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the choice of words effectively conveys the necessary details about the bag and the situation without ambiguity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter shows a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, though there are minor slips, such as 'I need it urgently' (should be 'I need them urgently' to refer to documents) and 'can not get hold' (should be 'could not'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the overall grammatical control is strong enough to support clear and effective communication.
