Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this to bring into your attention that yesterday I travelled to home from work via one of your taxis, but upon reaching home, I realized that I left my bag in the taxi. I rode from Franklin Boulevard and Saginaw Pkwy to Fountain Street and King St East intersection and the time was around 9 pm.

I kept my bag on the seat itself by my side while riding and I was on a call from my friend, when my stop came I was still on the call and did not realize to pick up my bag and left off without it before it came to my senses once I reached home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: explaining the loss, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. The details provided, such as the specific route, time, and the description of the bag's unique anti-theft features, are relevant and well-developed. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. The response is complete and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. Ideas flow well from the initial explanation to the description and the final request. Cohesive devices such as 'upon reaching home', 'as it contains', and 'i.e.' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the final sentence is incomplete ('Feel free to write back to me for the'), which creates a minor issue with cohesion at the very end of the text. Despite this, the overall structure remains clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task. You used some specific terms like 'anti-theft technology' and 'laptop backpack', which are precise. There are some minor awkward phrasings, such as 'bring into your attention' (should be 'bring to your attention') and 'left off without it' (which is slightly unnatural). However, the range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and with a good degree of precision. The vocabulary is functional and fits the formal context of the letter well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'travelled to home' (should be 'travelled home') and 'did not realize to pick up' (should be 'did not realize I had left' or 'forgot to pick up'). Punctuation is generally managed well, although the letter ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the majority of the sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
