Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to inquire about my bag, which I left in your taxi. I would appreciate it if you could courier my bag if you find my bag.
To begin with, I would like to explain that I was in a hurry for my important business meeting last night. This is mainly because my boss informed me about the meeting at the last moment. Consequently, instead of focusing on my backpack, I was totally indulged in imformation of meeting content that why I did release when I forgot my backpack in the taxi.
Furthermore, I would like to describe my backpack, which is all black with three silver chips on it. Also, it has a metal handle on top, and the company name is American Travel.
Finally, I would be grateful if you could find my bag because it has all documents related to my career. I believe that this is enough information to find my bag. Please let me know if any further information is required.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
your faithfully,
Amrit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how the bag was lost, provide a physical description of the item, and make a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. However, the explanation of the loss is slightly convoluted, particularly the phrase 'that why I did release when I forgot my backpack', which makes the narrative flow a bit confusing. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands exactly what is needed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the text. While these devices are used effectively, the connection between sentences within the second paragraph is occasionally strained due to grammatical errors, which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inquire', 'consequently', and 'consideration'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'totally indulged in imformation' (likely meant 'engrossed in information') and 'did release' (likely meant 'did not realize'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'that why I did release when I forgot' and 'your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). There are also minor issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
