Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining how the bag was lost, describing the bag, and requesting assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the bag is functional but could be more detailed to assist in identification. The explanation of the loss is clear, though the phrasing is occasionally repetitive. Overall, the response successfully addresses the task requirements, providing all necessary information to the reader in a clear manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the details of the incident and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is slightly fragmented due to the short, choppy nature of some sentences. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'but', 'also', and 'because', though they are sometimes used in a repetitive or slightly mechanical way. The use of 'Dear Sir' and 'Yours faithfully' is appropriate for the formal context. To improve, the student should focus on using a wider variety of linking words to create smoother transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but it lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of word-choice errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'which situated in' instead of 'which is situated in' and 'I cannot afford to loose it' (should be 'lose'). The student relies on basic descriptive terms like 'small' and 'blue'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or range required for a higher band score. Improving the accuracy of common collocations and using more specific adjectives would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('I forget' instead of 'I forgot'), missing articles, and punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary space before commas and the incorrect capitalization of the entire text. The use of 'which situated' is a grammatical error that impacts the flow. While the meaning remains clear throughout, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would be highly beneficial.
