Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to inquire about my lost office bag. My name is Pooja Mehra I work at SickKids hospital Toronto as a surgeon. Today morning I booked an Uber ride around 7am from my house 92, Ellesmere road scarborough to Sickkids Hospital Toronto. The ride lasted for 35mins. The driver dropped me at 7:35am on dundas street near my work, while I was about to get off I recieved an urgent call from my home and I was carrying various things with me my lunch bag, office documents file and my personal bag. I took my purse and lunch bag but due to rush I forgot my file holder.
It was a brown coloured leather bag from Denim. There is cute teddy key chain attached with it. I kindly request you to help me to find my bag, as it contains confidential patients information, which is really important for me to treat my patient. In the front pocket of that bag there is hospital ID card as well.
Please contact the driver I found his information on Uber app. The driver's name was Jemmy Wilson, he has black honda civic (CZ468H8). I hope you will help me out in this matter. Thank you for your time and assistance/
your sincerly,
Pooja Mehra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly explained how you lost your bag by detailing your Uber ride, the time, and the distraction of the urgent phone call that caused you to leave the file holder behind. Furthermore, you provided a thorough description of the bag, mentioning its brown leather material, the brand Denim, and the cute teddy key chain. Finally, you asked the manager for help and included specific details like the driver's name, vehicle, and licence plate number to assist in the search. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. All parts of the task are well-developed, earning a high band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with an overall logical arrangement of ideas. You used paragraphing to separate your introduction and explanation from the description and call to action. However, there are minor cohesion issues, such as run-on sentences in the first paragraph (e.g., 'My name is Pooja Mehra I work at...'). While cohesive devices are present, referencing and punctuation at sentence boundaries occasionally feel a bit rushed or faulty. Organising sentences with clearer conjunctions and full stops would elevate the flow. Nevertheless, information is logically sequenced throughout, meeting the criteria for a solid band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for the task. You successfully incorporated topic-specific terms like 'confidential patients information', 'surgeon', and 'file holder'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation limitations, as well as minor lexical inaccuracies such as 'Today morning' instead of 'This morning'. You also attempted some less common vocabulary items, but occasional errors in phrasing prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate your message clearly without causing misunderstandings for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and prepositional phrases. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, particularly run-on sentences and comma splices (e.g., 'My name is Pooja Mehra I work at...', and '...due to rush I forgot my file holder'). There are also missing articles and capitalization errors (e.g., 'scarborough', 'honda civic', 'your sincerly'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent you from achieving a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
