Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three parts of the task prompt, addressing how the bag was lost, describing its key features, and requesting assistance from the manager. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the overall situation is effectively communicated. However, some aspects of the response remain slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of the journey could be expanded with more precise details such as the time of the trip and the taxi license plate number. Furthermore, the tone fluctuates slightly between formal and informal elements, pointing towards a partial development of a fully appropriate register. To reach a higher band, the response would need to extend the supporting details further and maintain a consistently professional tone throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the initial explanation of the incident to the description of the bag and the final request for help. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of the letter, reflecting a logical structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times mechanical or somewhat basic, particularly the heavy reliance on transition phrases like 'so that' and run-on structures. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between ideas could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of coherence, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive markers and ensure that sentences are linked with greater stylistic flexibility rather than relying on repetitive conjunctions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to successfully convey the necessary information, such as 'laptop bag', 'production records', and 'supervisor'. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary items, but these are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'writing mail to Manager in becks services', 'in very hurry', and 'higer authorities'. Spelling mistakes like 'emplyee' also appear. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word selection, better control of collocations, and improved accuracy in spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in sentence structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that catch the reader's attention and occasionally cause difficulty. Examples include missing articles ('in very hurry', 'attend my meeting'), incorrect verb forms ('i book', 'it has a coach logo... and it has two pockets'), run-on sentences lacking appropriate punctuation, and preposition errors within grammatical patterns. While simple sentences are generally handled reasonably well, attempts at more complex structures often result in faulty syntax and punctuation slips. To improve, the writer must focus on foundational grammatical accuracy, correct verb tense consistency, and proper punctuation to ensure error-free complex sentences.
