Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You explain how the bag was lost by mentioning that the driver was in a rush, you describe the bag as being red in color with two major sections and long shoulder belts, and you ask the manager for help by requesting that they check the taxi for you. Your ideas are relevant and fulfill the overall purpose of the letter. However, some aspects of your response remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, sitting comfortably at the mid-range level. To push further into higher achievement, you could have provided more specific details, such as the exact time of the journey, your pickup and drop-off locations, or a clearer description of the important documents inside to help identify the bag more quickly. Nonetheless, your purpose is clear and the communication achieves its goal.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter shows a generally coherent overall arrangement, with a clear beginning and ending, and the purpose of your message is evident from the start. You attempt to link your ideas together and manage the flow of information regarding the incident and the description of the item. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or faulty, such as in the transitions between sentences where referencing could be smoother (for instance, "with one was kept in my lap and the another on the seat"). Paragraphing is also somewhat limited, as the body of the letter is grouped into a single dense block rather than being broken down into logical sections. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and separate your ideas into distinct, well-managed paragraphs for the introduction of the problem, the description, and the call to action.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about the lost bag and the taxi details (e.g., "documents", "shoulder"). You attempt some less common expressions, but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text. Examples include writing "in the concern of" instead of "concerning" or "about", referring to "one of your taxi" instead of "taxis", and using "in rush" instead of "in a rush". Additionally, phrases like "as I am remembering about it" sound unnatural. These lexical errors and awkward word choices do not completely impede communication, but they restrict your score because the control of vocabulary lacks precision and flexibility, showing frequent reliance on basic or incorrectly patterned terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Your writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with occasional attempts at complex sentences that often contain errors. You mix simple and complex forms, but grammatical inaccuracies occur frequently in areas such as articles, plurals, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. For example, you write "on seat" instead of "on the seat", "the another" instead of "the other", and "in red color" instead of "red in color". There are also punctuation and sign-off errors, such as "Your's sincerely,". While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher rating. To improve your grammatical range and accuracy, you need to practise forming more complex sentence structures accurately and pay closer attention to articles, prepositions, and singular-plural agreement.
