Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about my bag, which was lost in one of your company's taxis. I booked a ride yesterday from the shopping centre to my home, when I reached home I realised that I forgot my shopping bag in the taxi.

The reason why I was in hurry to reach home is heavy rain and thunderstorm. Due to bad weather, I was not able to book get a bus or train to reach home, thus I booked a private ride. Unfortunately, I had to share a ride with other passengers, because there was a shortage of cab drivers. Furthermore, it was crowdy and uncomfortable travelling, even I was carrying multiple bags with me. As a result, I forgot to get one of my bags from the trunk.

I would like to share some details on my bag, which helps your company to find it easily. It was a medium sized black bag, which has a zipper on the top. Moreover, the bag is from ZARA clothing brand inlcued one pair of a sandles.

I will need this bag as soon as possible as I have to attend an event next week where I will wear this footwear. I hope my information could help you to contact your employees and find it quickly. I look forward to hearing from you. I really appreciate your efforts and cooperation.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You have covered all parts of the task well, earning a high score in this area. You successfully explained how you lost your bag by mentioning the ride from the shopping centre and the chaotic conditions in the shared taxi. You also provided a clear description of your bag as a medium-sized black ZARA bag containing a pair of sandals and featuring a top zipper. Furthermore, you clearly asked the manager for assistance in finding it. All requirements are well developed and presented with a clear purpose and appropriate tone throughout the letter, reflecting a comprehensive handling of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with a standard greeting and an opening statement of purpose, followed by logical paragraph breaks that separate the background story, the bag description, and your closing appeal. You use cohesive devices flexibly to link your ideas, such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Moreover'. While the overall arrangement is coherent, a few transitions feel slightly mechanical, preventing a higher score. Nonetheless, your ideas flow smoothly from the problem to the description and finally to the requested action.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'thunderstorm', 'shortage', and 'private ride'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that slightly lower the impact of your writing, such as writing 'inry' or misspelling 'inlcued' and 'sandles', and using 'crowdy' instead of 'crowded'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and maintain an appropriate tone for a formal letter to a company manager.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses using 'when', 'because', and 'as'. You show good control of sentence structures overall, but there are some noticeable grammar errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'book get a bus', 'it was crowdy and uncomfortable travelling, even I was carrying', and 'details on my bag'. Punctuation and verb tenses are generally handled well, though these persistent minor errors place your grammar securely in the band where errors occur but rarely impede communication.
