Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the bullet points required for a general task. You clearly explained how you lost your bag by mentioning the journey from Barasat to Baranagar and forgetting it due to being late. You described your bag as being black with two compartments and containing new clothes and a shopping receipt, and you asked the manager to help you find it by checking the lost and found department. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company manager, and your position and purpose are clear throughout. To move towards a higher band, the details regarding the contents and circumstances could be slightly more fully extended, ensuring that every idea is thoroughly expanded with smooth elaboration rather than brief mentions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of ideas, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to the details of the loss, the description of the bag, the taxi details, and finally the request for assistance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the journey, the bag description, and the taxi details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty referencing, such as abrupt transitions between sentences and repetitive phrasing. To achieve a higher band, you could make better use of cohesive devices to link ideas naturally and ensure that referencing phrases are completely clear and seamless throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the necessary message about the lost bag, the taxi details, and the contents. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and specific details like compartments and receipt. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'writting', 'enquiry' (used as a verb instead of 'inquire'), 'getting late', 'cloths' (instead of clothes), 'reciept', and 'egarly'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect limitations in lexical precision and spelling control. To reach a higher band, you need to expand your range of vocabulary and eliminate spelling slips by carefully proofreading your work.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and conditional ideas. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as missing capitalization in 'i', incorrect verb tenses or forms like 'that i had left on taxi' instead of 'in a taxi', and issues with articles and prepositions. For example, writing 'let me know to my contact number' contains a prepositional error. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on mastering verb-preposition combinations, accurate articles, and standard capitalization to ensure your sentences are well-controlled.
