Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter because I ordered a taxi from your company yesterday. When I reached home, I was looking for my bag, but unfortunately I could not find it.

While I was in the taxi during that time I receive one phone call from my foreign client. At that time, I put my office bag, laptop and other stuff beside me. I have a brown color bag with a side clutch and attached with one small car kitchen. It has some of my office work documents too. As soon as I reached home, I tried to call the taxi driver, but he would not answer yet. That's why I have to inform you.

Please let me know as soon as possible because tomorrow I have an important meeting, and I need some of my documents that was inside my bag.

Best Regards,

Tanvi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You explain how you lost the bag by mentioning that you took a taxi yesterday and left it behind after receiving a phone call. You also describe the bag clearly as a brown office bag with a side clutch, attached small car keychain, and containing your laptop and documents. Finally, you ask the manager to help you find it. While all requirements are met, some ideas lean towards the satisfactory side of development, showing elements of a higher band through clear purpose, yet remaining slightly straightforward in their elaboration, such as the brief mention of the upcoming meeting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader logically from the introduction of the problem into the specific details of the lost item and finally to the call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your opening, the core description of the incident, and your closing request. However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical, particularly with transitions like 'At that time' and 'That's why', which show a reliance on basic linking devices rather than a more sophisticated flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your meaning with words like 'unfortunately', 'documents', and 'company'. You make attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'car kitchen' instead of 'keychain' or 'key ring', and 'stuff' which is slightly informal for a formal business letter. There are also minor awkward phrasings, but these do not seriously impede overall communication, placing your vocabulary firmly at an intermediate level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'When I reached home, I was looking for my bag...' and 'Please let me know as soon as possible because tomorrow I have an important meeting...'. There are some errors in grammar and verb tenses, such as 'during that time I receive one phone call' where the past tense is needed, and the tense shift in 'that was inside my bag' instead of 'were'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and your punctuation and overall sentence control remain generally clear.
