Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding leaving my bag in a Weego Taxi yesterday while heading home from work.
I requested a taxi on the app heading to Karen area from Westlands Square last evening at 5pm. While alighting, I did not remember to pick my bag from the car. Once I settled in the house an hour later, is when I realized that my bag was missing.
The bag is a brown leather travel bag that has clothes inside. It is heavy and is labelled Denri in silver. It is a bit old as I have had is for about four years now.
I would really appreciate if you can help me find it. I used a black Toyota Vitz and the drivers name was Daniel, I believe. I hope the information can help you locate him as I have not been able to reach him while trying to locate him.
Kind regards,
Joy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you lost the bag by mentioning your ride from Westlands Square to the Karen area and realising it was missing once you got home. You also provide a good description of the bag, noting that it is a brown leather travel bag, heavy, and labelled Denri in silver. Furthermore, you effectively ask the manager for help and include useful details such as the driver's name, Daniel, and the vehicle type. To reach the next level, you could have extended your ideas slightly more, perhaps by suggesting a specific resolution, such as offering a reward or asking them to check with the driver directly. Nonetheless, all parts of the task are appropriately covered with a clear and consistent tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate opening greeting and state your purpose immediately. Each body paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the context of the journey and how the bag was lost, to a detailed description of the item, and finally to your request for assistance with the driver's details. You use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well, though some linking could be slightly smoother. For instance, transitioning between sentences in the second paragraph could be tightened to avoid slight repetitiveness. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy for the reader to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with terms like 'alighting', 'travel bag', and 'locate him'. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'requesting a taxi on the app' and 'settled in the house'. However, there are some minor word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'regarding leaving my bag' instead of a more natural phrasing like 'regarding the loss of my bag', and saying 'I have had is for about four years' which contains a typographical error. These vocabulary and spelling choices do not impede communication, but eliminating them and incorporating slightly more sophisticated phrasings would elevate your writing further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate clauses effectively, such as in 'The bag is a brown leather travel bag that has clothes inside' and 'I hope the information can help you locate him'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'is when I realized' and the preposition usage in 'travelling to Karen area', where an article is missing. However, these errors persist alongside frequent error-free sentences and do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and verb tenses are handled appropriately as you recount the past events of yesterday alongside your current request.
