Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is Aakansha Chauhan. I am writing this letter to inquire about my lost bag, which I believe I left in a taxi.

I made a reservation of the taxi to attend an important meeting. The bag was with me during the meeting, but after coming home I realised that I forgot my bag. Moreover, the car I was traveling in was Toyota, and the number plate was ONGWS99.

It is a brown bag with dark blue chains. This bag contains my educational certificates along with company's data files. Therefore, it is confidential and very important for me.

I would be very grateful if you could help me to find my bag. I can collect the bag if it has been found. If you require any more information please contact.

I am looking forward to your quick response.

Warm regards,

Kansha.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points: you explain that you noticed the bag was missing after returning home, describe it as brown with dark-blue chains, and ask the manager to help locate it. Including the taxi’s make and registration number, as well as the bag’s contents, gives useful identifying details. The purpose and polite tone are clear throughout. However, the explanation of how the bag was left behind is brief: you do not say when or where you last had it in the taxi, or why you think it remained there. The response also falls five words short of the required minimum. Add a little more detail about the journey and the circumstances of the loss to develop the request more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to the journey and vehicle details, to the bag’s description, and finally to the request for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Therefore” and “I would be very grateful” help connect the information to your request. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. To make the organisation more polished, link the events in the loss explanation more explicitly: for example, clarify that you left the bag in the taxi and only noticed after arriving home. There is also a small spacing issue after “Moreover,” and the final request for contact information could be integrated more smoothly into the closing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and includes useful, specific terms such as “reservation,” “number plate,” “educational certificates,” and “confidential.” These details help the manager identify the vehicle and understand the importance of the bag. You also maintain a suitably polite register with “I would be very grateful.” Some expressions are less natural or precise, however: “made a reservation of the taxi” and “dark blue chains” may not convey your meaning as clearly as intended. “Quick response” is understandable but slightly abrupt in this formal request. More accurate collocations and a precise description of the bag’s straps or handles would show greater flexibility and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “my lost bag, which I believe I left in a taxi” and the conditional “if it has been found.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the sequence of past events is generally clear. Some grammatical issues remain. In “after coming home I realised that I forgot my bag,” the tense sequence would be clearer as “after I came home, I realised that I had forgotten my bag.” The sentence “If you require any more information please contact” is incomplete because it does not say whom to contact or provide contact details. Add a comma after the introductory “If” clause, and check punctuation and spacing consistently.
