Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring your attention to assist me in finding my bag, which I lost, while I was riding in one of the taxi owned by your company.

I was riding from Peshawar to Islamabad and the bag was in my hand during the journey, but as I was getting out of the car I saw my old friend and I rushed towards him and forgot to pick the bag .

The bag is black in colour with two large and one small pocket. The bag is medium size and it can accommodate almost 5 dresses. It contains my important educational documents along with my passport.

I request you to help me in searching of my bag from the given relevant information;the taxi was 2009 model civic, black in colour and was enrolled with your company having number 1232.

I am looking forward to your assistance in finding my bag.

Yours sincerely,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points: it explains that you rushed to greet an old friend while leaving the taxi, describes the bag’s colour, pockets and size, and asks the manager to help locate it. The taxi’s route and identifying details, including its model and number, also make the request more actionable. These relevant details and the clear purpose give the response a strong foundation. To make the information more fully developed, specify when and where the taxi journey took place and provide a way for the company to contact you. The request could also be more direct—for example, asking the manager to check with the driver and contact you if the bag is found.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: the purpose of the letter comes first, followed by the circumstances of the loss, the bag’s description and the taxi details. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and the closing is appropriate. This gives the letter a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical, particularly “I request you to help me in searching of my bag from the given relevant information,” which makes the final request harder to follow. The opening sentence also contains several ideas crowded together. Use clearer transitions and divide complex information into shorter sentences; for example, state the journey details separately from the explanation of how the bag was left behind.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “educational documents,” “passport,” “pockets” and “enrolled with your company,” and the reader can understand the main message. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably unnatural or imprecise, such as “bring your attention to assist me,” “searching of my bag” and “5 dresses.” These choices limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Prefer conventional expressions such as “I am writing to ask for your assistance,” “help me search for my bag,” and “hold around five dresses.” Also use “registered with your company” rather than “enrolled,” and avoid repeating “in colour” when describing the bag and taxi.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “as I was getting out of the car” and the description of what the bag contains. The main events remain understandable. However, errors in sentence construction and punctuation are evident: “one of the taxi owned by your company” needs a plural noun and a correctly formed modifier, while “I lost, while I was riding” has an unnecessary comma that disrupts the sentence. There are also missing spaces after full stops and commas, and the final request is built around an awkward grammatical pattern. Aim for more consistently controlled sentence forms, checking articles, plurals and punctuation—for example, “one of the taxis owned by your company.”
