Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

Hope your are doing well! I am writing this letter to inform you that I am selling my Bicycle.

Remember! I recently purchased gear bicycle on my 20th birthday last year. It became easier for me to commute from one place to another place. But my grandfather who is live in another city gifted me another bicycle two weeks ago, when our 12th grade result was declared. So, I no longer needed my old bicycle which is in excellent condition.

On our last meeting, you mentioned that you are planning to buy a bicycle because you are struggling to commute. Not only this, you I would like to sell my bicycle to you, if you have any questions ask me without any hesitation.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours truly,

Veerpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: explaining why you are no longer using the bike, describing it, and suggesting why your friend would want it. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which impacts the development of your ideas. While the content is relevant, the description of the bicycle is quite brief, and the explanation of why your friend would like it could be more detailed to fully satisfy the task requirements. To improve, ensure you expand on your points to meet the length requirement and provide more descriptive detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'But' and 'Not only this' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the description of the bike and the offer to the friend is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is also somewhat fragmented; grouping your ideas into more distinct paragraphs would improve the flow. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') would help create a smoother progression of ideas throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'commute', 'excellent condition', and 'consideration'. There are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'gear bicycle' (which should be 'a geared bicycle') and 'who is live' (which should be 'who lives'). While the vocabulary is adequate for this task, it is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives to describe the bicycle and more natural collocations to express your thoughts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'Hope your are doing well' (should be 'Hope you are'), 'who is live' (should be 'who lives'), and 'you I would like to sell' (which is a syntax error). These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to affect the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence construction will help you achieve a higher score.
