Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Samuel,

It's been a while since we caught up, I hope you are in your highest spirits. I am writing this letter to tell you that I am selling my bicycle which I used to drive back home.

Since I moved abroad, I just went back once and didn't really got a chance to drive it. Except for me, my brother used to drive it but now he has also moved for his graduation. So it's been sitting in garage for a year, occupying the space and my parents are forcing me to get rid of it now.

As you know it was a rare edition Hercules cycle which i got imported from U.K back in 2022. It was one out 100 pieces manufactured, due to its carbon-fiber frame it can go faster then any average car.

Instead of selling in market i thought if you would like to buy it as you already driven it regularly when we used to hangout. I knew you always wanted to have one, I can even sell it to you 10% less then market price if you'd pick it up from my place this week itself.

Let me know if you have any further questions, see you soon.

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why the bicycle is no longer in use (moving abroad and lack of use), provided a description of the item (a rare Hercules edition with a carbon-fiber frame), and explained why your friend would be interested (he has ridden it before and expressed interest). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. The response is well-developed and covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since I moved', 'Instead of', and 'As you know' to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be slightly improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'rare edition', 'manufactured', and 'carbon-fiber frame'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as using 'drive' for a bicycle (bicycles are 'ridden') and 'sitting in garage' (should be 'in the garage'). Additionally, '10% less then' should be '10% less than'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate for the object being described.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'didn't really got a chance' (should be 'didn't really get'), 'one out 100' (should be 'one out of 100'), and 'faster then' (should be 'faster than'). Punctuation is generally fine, though there are some minor issues with capitalization and missing articles. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing your focus on verb tense consistency and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
