Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Labhjeet,

I'm writing this letter to you regarding my bicycle that I prefer to sell it to you.

I think, I forgot to share with you that recently I have changed my job. The new job location is in Toronto and it far away from my home. It takes around there hours to travel there by metro. So, due to hectic work schedule, I don't have time to go out on bike. In addition, I am planning to move to Toronto next month. Therefore, I have decided to sell it.

I’m giving you description of my bicycle. It is a sleek, black Trek hybrid model with an 18-inch lightweight aluminum frame. It features high-quality Shimano gears for smooth shifting and puncture-resistant tires that are perfect for both city streets and light park trails. Also, it has front and rea I bought it last year brand new

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: explaining why you are selling the bike, describing it, and suggesting why your friend would like it. However, the response is incomplete at the end, as the sentence 'Also, it has front and rea' is cut off, and the final sentence lacks proper punctuation. Furthermore, the response falls just short of the 150-word minimum requirement. To improve, ensure you complete all sentences and provide a slightly more detailed explanation of why your friend would benefit from the bike to ensure the word count is comfortably met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required bullet points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, the flow is interrupted by the incomplete sentence at the end of the second paragraph, which affects the overall coherence. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'sleek', 'hybrid model', 'lightweight aluminum frame', and 'puncture-resistant'. These terms are used accurately and help to describe the bicycle effectively. There are some minor errors, such as 'I prefer to sell it to you' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'I have decided to sell it to you' would be better). Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but you should aim to avoid repetitive sentence structures and ensure all words are fully written out.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The new job location is in Toronto and it far away from my home'. There are some grammatical errors, including 'it far away' (missing the verb 'is'), 'there hours' (should be 'three'), and the incomplete sentence at the end. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall accuracy. Focus on proofreading your work to catch missing verbs and spelling errors to improve your score.
