Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I hope you're doing great. It's been a while since we last caught up! I have some great news for you. As I know that you are looking for a bicycle, I want to sell my bicycle because I'm not using it anymore.

The primary reason why I want to sell my bicycle is that I bought a car one month ago. Recently, I had to change my job due to certain circumstances, and my new workplace is quite far from my current location. The distance to my previous work by bicycle was 5 minutes, so that's why I bought this cycle, but it's no longer useful for me because of my car.

I would like to mention that this bicycle was brand new when I purchased it last year. It is black color bicycle with two baskets, one in front of it, and one at the back. It's in good condition and has a one-year remaining warranty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained why you are no longer using the bike (due to purchasing a car), described the bike (black, two baskets, warranty), and provided a reason why your friend would like it. However, the final bullet point—explaining why your friend would like it—is missing from your text. You mentioned that you know they are looking for a bike, but you did not explicitly state why this specific bike would be a good fit for them (e.g., its reliability or suitability for their needs). To reach a higher band, ensure every bullet point is fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical progression, starting with a friendly opening and moving into the purpose of the letter. Paragraphing is used to separate the reason for selling from the description of the item. You use some cohesive devices like 'The primary reason' and 'I would like to mention', which help the flow. However, the transition between the reason for selling and the description could be smoother. The overall structure is clear and easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this band level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some descriptive terms like 'brand new' and 'remaining warranty'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'black color bicycle' instead of 'black-colored bicycle' or 'a black bicycle'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the range of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of sophistication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or varied phrasings to describe the bicycle's features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'It is black color bicycle' (missing an article and needing an adjective form) and 'distance to my previous work... was 5 minutes' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally good, and you show an ability to use complex sentences effectively to explain your situation.
