Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Elsie, how's it going, it's being ages, hope the family is doing well. Do you remember my bicycle, the one I use to go for shopping and ride to school as well, I'm planning to sell it. I know perfectly that it would be of good use to you so I was wondering if you could purchase it for you rounds.

The main reason for me selling this item is that I will be travelling out of town and I'll not be taking it with me.

The cycle is long with a basket in front, it has a helmet that will protect you from any kind of crush, it also has a lock that anytime you are not using , you could lock it to prevent it from being stollen.

I believe you would like to purchase it because , it is still new, besides it will help you from stress when going to school, moreover, it safe's time and the basket in front will help you keep your grosries after shopping. And guess what, the price is affordable.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours ever,

Lydia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why you are selling the bicycle (travelling), described the bicycle (long, basket, helmet, lock), and provided reasons why your friend would like it (new, saves time, affordable). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide slightly more descriptive detail about the bicycle's condition or specific features to make the letter more engaging and fully developed, which would help push your score into the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'besides', 'moreover', and 'the main reason for me selling'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it') is always clear. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to structure your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'purchase', 'affordable', and 'groceries'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'stollen' instead of 'stolen' and 'safe's time' instead of 'saves time'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more attention to spelling and collocations. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives to describe the bicycle and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it's being ages' (should be 'it's been ages'), 'I use to go' (should be 'I used to go'), and 'for you rounds' (should be 'for your rounds'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage before conjunctions. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
