Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining why the bicycle is no longer used, describing the bike, and suggesting why the friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the bicycle is quite brief, and the explanation of why the friend would like it could be more persuasive. While the task is fully addressed, the ideas lack the depth required for a higher band score. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the bullet points. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the explanation of the new job and the description of the bike is abrupt. Additionally, there is a lack of variety in linking words, which makes the flow feel slightly repetitive. Improving the use of transition phrases would help the ideas connect more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the message clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'mountain bike', 'suspensions', and 'gear'. However, the range is limited, and there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am looking forward to sell' (should be 'selling') and 'come late in night' (should be 'come home late at night'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include punctuation errors (missing commas and full stops), subject-verb agreement problems ('it contain' instead of 'it contains'), and incorrect verb forms ('I stop using' instead of 'I have stopped using'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence structure, verb tense consistency, and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
