Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sukhdeep,

Hope this mail finds you well, I am writing this to inform you about selling my bicycle. I was using it while going to school and as you know, I am promoted to college now. Also, I bought a new bike and I don't have enough space for it, so that is why I want to sell it. It is a black colour ranger model bicycle in a good condition, just few days before I got it repaired with new pair of tyres and breaks. As you are still left with two-years of school, this bicycle can be an option for you. I am selling it for just $100 and if you are interested in buying this we can negotiate the price. Also, if by any chance you do not want my bicycle, please refer it to your friends.

Hoping for your responce at the earliest.

Your Best Friend

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why you are no longer using the bicycle (college transition and lack of space), provide a description (black, ranger model, recently repaired), and offer a logical reason why your friend would want it (they are still in school). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly on the description of the bicycle to make the writing more engaging, as the current development is functional but brief. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph or section addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the reason for selling to the description and finally the offer. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'so that is why' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the entire body of the letter is presented as a single block. Using distinct paragraphs for the explanation, description, and the offer would significantly improve the visual and logical structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'negotiate', 'refer', and 'informed'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'breaks' (should be 'brakes') and 'responce' (should be 'response'). Additionally, 'just few days before' is slightly unnatural; 'a few days ago' would be more accurate. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would help you reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I am promoted to college' (should be 'I have been promoted' or 'I am starting college') and 'as you are still left with two-years of school' (the hyphen is unnecessary). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some comma splices, such as in the opening sentence. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
