Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are well. I came to know that you are looking for a bicycle. As you know that I have a new bicycle and I am going back in India this year. Because my father is opening a new business there. That is why, I want to sell this cycle as soon as possible. I will feel happy, if you like to buy this.

It has back colour and it is top ranger model. I know you will like this cycle. It has strong gear power.

The main reason why i Wish you should buy this is that It was gifted by my grandfather. He is no more now. I feel it is his love towards me. As you are my bosom friend since childhood then you will take care of this bicycle like me. If you are ready to buy it then I feel my bicycle in right hands.

If you have any question then feel free to ask me anytime.

Best regards,

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining why you are no longer using the bike, describing it, and explaining why your friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the bicycle as a 'top ranger model' with 'back colour' is quite brief and lacks detail. While the task is fully addressed, the ideas could be expanded with more descriptive language to better engage the reader and fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'That is why' and 'The main reason why', which help connect your thoughts. However, the use of linking words is sometimes repetitive or slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transitions and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a personal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some personal and emotive language, such as 'bosom friend' and 'gifted by my grandfather', which adds a nice touch. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'back colour' (likely meaning black) and 'strong gear power'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your description. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and ensuring correct collocations would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am going back in India' (should be 'to'), 'I will feel happy, if you like to buy this' (unnecessary comma), and 'As you are my bosom friend since childhood then you will take care' (awkward structure). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and refining your prepositions will improve your score.
