Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Annie,

I'm writing to you to give a great sale offer for my bicycle.

As you know, in last few months I started working as a cab-driver, in which I have to drive my vehicle more frequently for work. This will lead no time left for me to ride the bicycle and because of that I want to sell it, so that purchaser can ut

Currently, it has some rusk over its spikes, although which can easily remove by rusk removing spray. It is smoother as before as I didn't ride for a long-time and has a wonderful appearance.

It will be a great option for you because you have to travel to rural side, where there is a no direct bus-route. By having it would make you fit and independent, because you can travel anywhere you want. More importantly, It would reduce your daily expenses of travel so that you can save money for a car in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why you are selling the bike, describing it, and explaining why your friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the bicycle is slightly confusing due to language errors, and the explanation of why your friend would like it could be more persuasive. To improve, ensure that your descriptions are clear and that your arguments are fully developed to better engage the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'because of that', 'although', and 'more importantly' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and grammatical errors, such as the incomplete sentence at the end of the first paragraph ('so that purchaser can ut'). The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression could be smoother with more varied linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, but there are several errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, you use 'rusk' instead of 'rust' and 'spikes' instead of 'spokes'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to bicycles and ensure you are using common collocations correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'in last few months', 'this will lead no time', and 'there is a no direct bus-route'. These errors are frequent and sometimes affect the accuracy of your communication. While you are able to convey your meaning, you need to work on article usage, verb tenses, and sentence construction to improve your accuracy and reach a higher band.
