Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Friend,

I am writing to sell my bicycle that is no longer using.

Actually, I have purchased a new car for commuting to one place to another place . In addition, I do not need bicycle and not able to do cycling because of hectic schedule. Therefore, I want to sell you in a reasonable price.

I have a Hero bicycle in a black coloure with a good condition. However, It was given by my parents on my birthday. So, I am emotionally connected with it and only give to my close ones.

Moreover, I remeber that you love cycling and you want to purchase then I want to sell you. Beside of this, you can do cycling, daily excercise and commute for less distance. Consequently, You can take my bicycle with in affordable price and become fit as faddle by doing cycling. I would be delighted if you would buy my bicycle. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why you are no longer using the bike (new car and hectic schedule), describe the bike (Hero brand, black, good condition), and explain why your friend would like it (they enjoy cycling and it is affordable). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the bicycle's features or elaborate further on the shared history or the specific benefits for your friend. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'In addition,' and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'Beside of this,' which is not a standard English phrase. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it,' 'this') is always precise. Overall, the structure is sufficient for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, including terms like 'commuting,' 'hectic schedule,' and 'affordable.' However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation that affect the naturalness of the writing. For example, 'sell you in a reasonable price' should be 'sell it to you at a reasonable price,' and 'fit as faddle' is an incorrect idiom (the correct one is 'fit as a fiddle'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'coloure' and 'remeber.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they limit the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include missing articles ('need bicycle'), incorrect preposition usage ('at a reasonable price' instead of 'in'), and awkward phrasing ('that is no longer using' should be 'that I am no longer using'). Subject-verb agreement and sentence construction are occasionally problematic, such as 'I want to sell you' when you mean 'sell it to you.' While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, as the intended meaning remains clear to the reader.
