Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear max,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing to you regarding the offer to sell my bicycle to you. As I have to move to different province for my work.

As i remember during our last conversation, you have joined a run club located near you. And they usually plan rides to nearby hiking places every weekend. I know that you are a fitness freak and would love to join them. Therefore, I would suggest you to buy my bike to get comfortable with the process.

The cycle is very comfortable as, it includes 24 gears as well as disk brakes on both sides, which Improves the experience and safety at the same time at a special price of $200. If you are willing to buy i would also include a safety helmet for no extra charges.

I hope you think about it and let me know by the end of the month, as i have to move in the first week of the next month.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the reason for selling the bike (moving to a different province), described the bicycle (24 gears, disk brakes), and provided a persuasive reason why your friend would enjoy it (joining a run club and hiking). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, ensure that you fully develop your ideas; for instance, you could have elaborated slightly more on the condition of the bike to make the offer even more compelling.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the different points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. For example, the transition 'As i remember' and 'Therefore' are functional but could be more varied. Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented, such as 'As I have to move to different province for my work,' which lacks a main clause. Improving the flow between sentences would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'fitness freak,' 'disk brakes,' and 'no extra charges.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies and informal phrasing. For instance, 'different province' should be 'a different province,' and 'get comfortable with the process' is a bit vague in this context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to cycling or selling items, and ensure consistent capitalization of the personal pronoun 'I'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several recurring grammatical errors. There are issues with article usage ('to different province'), punctuation (comma splices like 'The cycle is very comfortable as, it includes'), and capitalization ('i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proper sentence boundaries will significantly improve your accuracy.
